On the electromagnetic momentum of static charge and steady current distributions

چکیده

Faraday’s and Furry’s formulas for the electromagnetic momentum of static charge distributions combined with steady electric current distributions are generalised in order to obtain full agreement with Poynting’s formula in the case where all fields are of class C, i.e., continuous and continuously differentiable, and the integration volume is of finite or infinite extent. These three formulas are further generalised to the case where singularities are allowed to exist at isolated points in the fields, and at surfaces separating domains in which the distributions are of class C. Applications are made to electric and magnetic, point-like and finite dipolar systems, with an emphasis on the impact of singularities on the magnitude and location of the electromagnetic momentum.

Tuval’s Electromagnetic Spaceship

1 Problem In two recent e-prints, Tuval and Yahalom proposed " electromagnetic spaceships " based on the net force exerted on a pair of time-dependent current loops [1], or a time dependent current loop and a permanent magnet [2]. Show that rocket propulsion (net gain of mechanical momentum of an isolated system) is possible in the first example, but not in the second. Ampère argued [3] that th...

Modeling Magnetic Field in Heavy ion Collisions Using Two Different Nuclear Charge Density Distributions

By studying the properties of matter during heavy-ion collisions, a better understanding of the Quark-Gluon plasma is possible. One of the main areas of this study is the calculation of the magnetic field, particularly how the values of conductivity affects this field and how the field strength changes with proper time. In matching the theoretical calculations with results obtained in lab, two diffe...

Electromagnetic momentum of an electric dipole in a uniform magnetic field

The electromagnetic momentum of an electric dipole in a uniform magnetic field of strength B0 is equal to B0×p/2, where p is the electric moment of the dipole, provided the charge and current distributions generating the electric and magnetic fields are spatially separated. In the degenerate case where these distributions fully overlap, or else are concentrated in a single point, the electromag...

J.J. Thomson and “Hidden” Momentum

The term “hidden momentum” was introduced by Shockley [1] in 1967 to describe the small amount of net mechanical momentum that must exist in systems “at rest” that have nonzero electromagnetic field momentum. The classic example is a current loop (Ampèrian magnetic dipole) in an external static electric field (perhaps due to a single electric charge) [4, 5]. This example had been considered by ...

Parameter Identification of a Brushless Resolver Using Charge Response of Stator Current

Because of temperature independence, high resolution and noiseless outputs, brushless resolvers are widely used in high precision control systems. In this paper, at first dynamic performance characteristics of brushless resolver, considering parameters identification are presented. Then a mathematical model based on d-q axis theory is given. This model can be used for studying the dynamic b...
